Did you know that research has consistently shown that exercise can have a positive impact on mental health?
A study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research found that just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercises, such as brisk walking, three times a week can be as effective as medication for reducing symptoms of depression. Another study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that individuals who engaged in regular physical activity had a 43% lower risk of developing depression than those who were inactive.
My clients that ask for help with exercise motivation, are generally wanting to lose weight. It seems to be the biggest motivator to get out and move, the great thing is, it helps your mental health as much as your physical.
It doesn’t matter what someone is seeing me for, I always recommend getting out and walking 30 minutes a day. This doesn’t have a be a fast walk that can cause pain or stress, a gentle mindful walk can be just as good.
When I ask a client to do this, sometimes they screw their face up and say “I don’t like exercise!”
We were born wanting to be outside, wanting to run around and have fun. When there is a negative feeling attached to exercise, we always work on this in a session. You would be surprised what comes up. Often it stems back to childhood days having to run at a school competition and not winning, or even being told sports isn’t your strength.
